Releasing Emotional and Physical Pain 101

By Brenda N. Hatfield, LMT

“The mental and physical space we create by letting go of the things that belong in our past gives us… the option to fill the space with something new.” -Susan Fay West

If you are a human living on this earth you can depend on one thing, you will experience some physical and emotional pain in your lifetime. It is how we choose to process and release that pain that determines whether we live a life of peace and joy or allow the pain to eat us up from the inside out. Our connection between our minds bodies and spirit have been severed. We are a generation of humans that numb ourselves with pills, alcohol, drugs, people, things or food to avoid our feelings and emotions. We blame others or ourselves when things do not go as we expect. We worry about the could-haves and the should-haves. We try to control others and circumstances that we have no control over. We live in regrets of the past and fear of the future while the present passes us by. We resist the changes that present in life and hold on to past hurts and avoid forgiveness to prove our point. We carry this physical and emotional baggage around in our bodies and our bodies are in pain.

As an emotional and physical healer, I see clients every day in my practice that come to me to process and release the pain and emotions that are stored in their bodies and minds. I teach my clients that their bodies are amazing communicators and processors and it is important to experience their emotions and feelings. Our bodies respond to our thoughts. When our thoughts are negative, our bodies react. When our thoughts are positive, our bodies react. When we are aware and tuned into our bodily sensations, we will receive the information that we need and be better at creating peace and joy. f you are a human living on this earth you can depend on one thing, you will experience some physical and emotional pain in your lifetime. As you practice listening to your body, you become aware of the excess baggage you are holding. When you choose to surrender and release, you will notice some huge changes right away.

  • Your awareness of what your body actually needs will be very clear.
  • You will notice that during your day you are more calm, centered and grounded.
  • You will have a better night’s sleep.
  • You will be more aware of how other people’s energies effect your emotions and you become less reactive and more responsive.
  • You are more able to effectively process and ease tension, anger, anxiety and sadness.
  • You will notice that you are living more in the present than worrying about the past or future.

Take a few minutes each morning and night with this meditation to connect, release and be in gratitude for your body

Sit or lie down in a comfortable position and take three deep, slow breaths.
Keep breathing normally and notice the sensations in your heart and lungs as you breathe an in-breath and then the out-breath. Let go and release any tension, pain or emotion in your heart and lungs. Be in the space of gratitude for the ways that your heart and lungs serve you in this life.

Now begin the scan of your body. Start at your toes and feet. Notice the sensations in your toes and feet. Let go and release any tension, pain or emotion in your feet and toes. Be in the space of gratitude for how your toes and feet serve you in this life.

Be aware of the physical sensations in your legs. Let go and release any tension, pain or emotion in your legs. Be in a space of gratitude for the ways your legs serve you in this life.

Continue moving your awareness up your body in this way: upper legs, hips and pelvis, lower torso, upper torso, upper arms, lower arms, shoulders, neck, head.

Let go and release any tension, pain, or emotion in these parts of your body. Be in a space of gratitude for the ways all these serve you in this life.

Feel your body as a whole. Scan your body and let go and release any remaining tension, pain or emotion left in your body as a whole. Be in a space of gratitude for the ways your body as a whole serves you in this life.

Ask your body if there is anything that you need to know.

Ask your body if there is anything else that deserves to be released and surrendered.

Take a deep breath and start to move your toes, and your fingers, Take another deep breath and you are complete.

Release and Surrender Tool

A powerful simple tool that I use with my clients is the Surrender and Release Box. Find a small container that suites you and get ready to release and surrender. I ask them to get small pieces of paper like Post-it notes and write the following words. I surrender and release this _____________ (person, situation, or thing) to the _____________(universe, my Creator, or God) I trust that it will be handled completely. And so it is…

Say it out loud. Fold the paper and put it in the box. And it is complete.

This process has proven time and again to create miracles. When we engage our hands by writing it down, our voice by speaking it out loud, the action of giving it away and then trust, we give ourselves permission to release and surrender.

Make the choice to let go of the things that make you feel powerless. Grab hold of the idea that you are powerful. You are the creator of your life experience. Be a Conscious Creator.
